The right protective clothing for your bike

20 May 2025

Being safe on the bike is not just a matter of the children's own riding habits and a well-maintained vehicle, but also a question of protective clothing. We explain what you should pay attention to when choosing the right protective clothing for children.

Asphalt and road traffic
Anyone who cycles to school or kindergarten (but also to work) or generally spends a lot of time on the road should wear head protection and, above all, ensure that they are clearly visible to other road users.

Without a helmet, without me
Anyone who is still asking themselves the question (or is being asked by young people) why you always have to wear a helmet when cycling should watch the famous watermelon video ( Never without a helmet: risk out! - YouTube ). It clearly demonstrates the difference a helmet makes in a fall.
The fruit is dropped to the ground once with and once without head protection. Spoiler alert: The bowler hat protected by the helmet comes off much better. In fact, a helmet absorbs up to two-thirds of the energy that would otherwise directly affect the head in the event of an impact. In plain language, this means that those who wear helmets are less likely to suffer serious head injuries such as skull fractures or cerebral hemorrhages.

Shine like a star: reflective clothing
The top priority in traffic: see and be seen! Your child should be made as visible as possible to other road users (especially in autumn and winter). In addition to the standard bicycle lights and reflectors on the bicycle itself, reflective jackets, high-visibility vests , covers for backpacks or school bags as well as additional flashing and lighting elements ensure that small (and large) road users get through everyday traffic safely.

Over hill and dale
Things look a little different when it comes to mountain or trail bikes.
If your child (or you) regularly criss-cross flora and fauna, you should always ensure that you have appropriate protective equipment to prevent major injuries in the event of a fall.

No helmet, no fun
Actually, we don't have to mention that a helmet should be part of the basic equipment for all bikers , right?
The helmet has to be with you - always, whether in the city park, on the street, in the forest or in the bike park

Lost without protectors
Protectors are used to protect a specific part of the body in the event of an impact or fall. The forces resulting from a fall are distributed over a larger area by the protectors and the impact energy is thus dampened. They also prevent abrasions and reduce the risk of injury from sharp objects such as stones or branches. Jackets or vests equipped with protectors also stabilize the spine. A distinction is made between soft and hard-shell protectors.

Guards and protectors for MTB kids

Anyone who has ever suffered an injury to their knee or elbow knows how painful and lengthy it can be. It is therefore particularly important to protect your knee and elbow joints with protectors. Here, attention should be paid to models that protect without restricting freedom of movement too much.

Gimme Grip: Gloves
Gloves offer enthusiastic mountain bike riders more grip and better protection from the weather and falls. In addition, unpleasant friction points are avoided on longer journeys.
While short, finger-free gloves can be used in summer, long-fingered gloves are recommended in cooler temperatures.

Our conclusion
No matter whether it's leisure and hobby or on the daily way to school or kindergarten: nothing works without the appropriate protective clothing! Only through appropriate equipment - depending on the activity in question - can you be sure that the child is optimally protected at all times. However, the helmet is always mandatory!
