Help, the bike chain came out!

20 May 2025

A quick “Krrrkk” and it happened – the bike chain jumped out. Fortunately, you can fix the problem yourself within a very short time and reinsert the chain. In this article we will explain to you how you can reinstall a broken chain yourself and what the causes of a broken chain can be.

The causes of a “jumpy bicycle chain”
In general, there are three main reasons why a chain comes off. On the one hand, this could be a strong contamination or a rusty bicycle chain. As a result, the individual chain links become difficult to move, become entangled and can no longer reach the sprocket properly.
For this reason, the chain often only rides on the tips of the sprocket, which can cause it to fall off easily. What can help here is to oil the chain really well or - if the former has no effect - to put on a completely new chain.
On the other hand, a chain that is too loose can cause it to jump out, especially when the ride is rough. In this case, the tension of the chain must be increased.
The third reason could be a misaligned rear derailleur . On bicycles with derailleur gears, the rear derailleur ensures that there is always enough chain tension. The rear derailleur also determines which sprocket the chain runs on. If the rear derailleur is misaligned, the chain can come off. We recommend that you have a specialist take a look at it.

Reinstalling the chain: step by step
Luckily, replacing a broken chain isn't rocket science.
If there is a chain guard, it must first be removed; this is particularly easy if you approach it from behind.
Then take the chain, pull the rear derailleur forward and try to hook the chain onto the large gear first. Then try to turn the pedal backwards and then hook the remaining part of the chain back onto the small gear.
If the chain tension is too loose, the axle nut must be loosened with an open-end wrench. Then pull the rear wheel back slightly until the desired tension is achieved.
