Learn to ride a bike faster with balance bikes

20 May 2025

At some point the time has come: the child wants to learn to ride a bike!
Of course, you want to make the start of your child on two wheels as painless and fall-free as possible so that they can pedal as quickly as possible. Preparation is everything: Balance bikes can provide valuable preparatory work even in early childhood to make it easier for your child to get started with cycling.

An old hat rediscovered
Most adults today probably learned to ride a bike in the classic way with training wheels - one or two additional wheels bolted to the rear wheel that distribute the weight better and prevent falling over. The balance bike for children became popular from the end of the 90s - at least that's when official sales began.
The idea of the balance bike itself is old hat, as it was first brought onto the market in 1817. Back then called a draisine (named after its inventor Karl Drais), the design had neither handlebars nor pedals and only had to be controlled by the pure balance of the human body. However, the vehicle didn't really catch on at the time, due to poor roads, uncomfortable seats, unsprung wheels and a high price.

Learning to ride a bike is child's play
To put it simply, a balance bike is a bicycle without pedals. The technology is simple and can be learned quickly by very young children - depending on their level of development - from around the age of two.
Like a bicycle, the child sits on the saddle and holds on to the handlebars, which can be used to steer the balance bike. Pushing off your feet sets the vehicle in motion. In contrast to the tricycle, balance is already trained here, as the child has to hold the balance bike in position using his body. Motor skills and sense of balance are trained through play. At the same time, dealing with obstacles is practiced and the child is prepared for handling a “normal” bike.
Since the little ones can always easily reach the ground with their feet, the risk of falling and injury with a balance bike is relatively low. Experience shows that children who have already ridden a balance bike learn to ride a bike within a very short time.

Our conclusion
A balance bike is a simple, fun and cost-effective way to prepare your child for cycling at an early age. The kids train their balance, getting on and off in a playful way and unconsciously prepare themselves for handling a real bike. This makes switching to a “real” bike easier and they learn it much faster.
