Safely cycle to primary school etc.

20 May 2025

Does your child love their bike so much that they would like to ride it to school or kindergarten? Fine! In very few cases you can avoid traffic. For this reason, a few things should be taken into account so that your child can move around in it as safely as possible. Which? We'll tell you that in this article.

No helmet, no way!
Regardless of whether the primary school or kindergarten is right around the corner, or whether you are “just going for a quick ride” – a bicycle helmet is mandatory. Always! Make it clear to your child that head protection is essential on the bike.

Not to be missed
An essential factor for your child's safety on the road: making them as visible as possible to other road users!
In fact, tricky situations in road traffic usually arise when you are noticed too late or not at all by other road users. Helmets in bright signal colors with integrated lighting, colorful, reflective clothing, reflective material on backpacks and school bags or high-visibility vests ensure better visibility for your child even in poor visibility conditions.

Road-safe children's bike
According to the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO), a children's bike is already equipped with rear and front lights, cat eyes, reflectors, brakes and a bell. More is always possible! Additionally, additional lights and reflectors can be attached to increase visibility. Since children are easily obscured by parked cars due to their size, they are often not seen crossing the street until they are already on the street. Such dangerous situations can be avoided using pennants mounted on the bicycle, which visually enlarge the bicycle.

Practice traffic rules
Even if the child is dressed from head to toe in reflective clothing and flashes like a Christmas tree, this in no way replaces knowledge of common traffic rules and regular practice of correct behavior in traffic. Therefore, train together with your child in practice as often as possible and make them aware of the need to pay attention and be careful with other road users. Pointing out and explaining dangerous situations (e.g. not walking onto the street between parked cars) should also be included in the exercises.
Tip: Traffic training areas are a wonderful opportunity to practice traffic rules in a safe environment. Also: be a role model! Children imitate the behavior of adults, preferably their own parents.

Already knew?
Children must ride on the sidewalk until they are eight years old and are even allowed to ride on the sidewalk until they are ten.

Our conclusion
Visibility, protective clothing and mindfulness in traffic are the be-all and end-all for a safe journey to school and kindergarten. The easier your child is to be seen by other road users and the more familiar he is with the traffic rules, the safer he can move around in traffic. Make sure that your child's bike is up to date with the latest road traffic regulations and regularly practice the correct behavior in traffic with him.
With this preparation, nothing stands in the way of your daily journey to school and kindergarten.
